Pastor's Letter - March 11, 2018

In the Gospel today from Saint John the Evangelist records for us the words of Jesus to Nicodemus: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” We know that the Lord was referring to His being “lifted up” on the cross. Each time we gaze upon the Crucifix – especially during this season of Lent – we should recall that we receive salvation through the suffering, death, and resurrection of the Lord. In addition to that knowledge, we also experience peace and comfort as we contemplate that our Lord understands our suffering.

Lent is a “Season of Grace”, a built-in spiritual retreat time. Now that we’ve reached the half-way point of Lent, it is most helpful to recommit oneself to the Lenten disciplines first embraced at the beginning. St. Paul compares our faith life to a race. And so he exhorts us to “run so as to win!” You’ll find in this bulletin the schedule for Masses, confessions, Stations of the Cross, as well as other opportunities here at SSPP or in the area to grow in faith this Lenten season. Let’s “sprint” to Easter!

On Thurs., March 1, I held an information/organization meeting to establish the SSPP Buildings & Grounds committee. Even though I gave a very short notice for this meeting, 15 people attended! We made excellent progress in laying the foundations for an effective working committee. I have scheduled another meeting for Thurs., April 5 at 6:30pm in the Church basement, at which time we will formalize the structure of the committee, and begin identifying projects. Even if you did not attend the first meeting, if you have practical knowledge with construction, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, landscaping, etc., you are most welcome to come to the April meeting.

May God bless you!
