Pastor's Letter - September 22, 2019

“First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.” St. Paul’s instructions to Timothy still apply. The necessity of praying for our president, members of Congress, and all in positions of authority is even more urgent now. Being a good Christian means also being a good citizen. With all men and women of good will, we seek a just order to society that all might be able to “lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.” It is also important that each person seek to be properly informed and formed in those moral issues which are part of our Catholic Faith and applicable to our culture. Then it is necessary for each person to understand well where the various candidates stand on these important issues. Finally, we have the right and obligation to participate in the political process by voting. Our Faith must never be something which is relegated to Sunday only. Some people would like to intimidate us Catholics; it is almost as if every other interest group or organization has the right to voice their opinions and get involved in the culture except for Catholics! As Pope John Paul II mentioned for many years (and Benedict XVI & Francis have confirmed): we must be involved in bringing the Gospel to every aspect of our life, and of helping to form a true culture of life.

Jesus Is the Steward

It begins with remembering our Baptism, when we became followers of Jesus Christ. From this call flows the commitment to Christ that makes stewardship possible – and deeply rewarding. However, this is a commitment to a lifetime of action, and it requires sacrifice. Through following Christ, we have the benefit of the role model of sacrifice for the greater good, a model of self-giving and loving service. It is up to you to determine practically how you will live out this stewardship way of life. You will not be alone, however. Your fellow parishioners - and I, your pastor - and Catholics around the Diocese are traveling together with you. Please be generous in supporting and pray for the success of the Diocesan Annual Appeal in our parish and throughout the Diocese of La Crosse!

May God bless you!
