From the Desk of Fr. Schaller - April 10, 2022

The Holy Season of Lent culminates in the Church’s celebration of Holy Week. There is no more important observance in the Christian calendar than the celebration of the events of our salvation: the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday; the institution of the Sacraments of Holy Orders and the Eucharist at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday; the suffering and death of the Lord on Good Friday; and His glorious resurrection on Easter. Plan now to participate in the whole Sacred Triduum: Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday (7:00pm - followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until Midnight), Passion Service on Good Friday (12:30pm), and the most important celebration of the entire year, the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday (8:30pm). And, of course, Easter Sunday Mass at 10:00am. This is what we have been preparing for all Lent! I strongly encourage you to attend all three services during the Triduum, if possible. Make this a Holy Week!!

G.K. Chesterton was a great English writer and poet – and Catholic convert! – who died in 1936. For your Palm Sunday reflection, I offer his poem:

“The Donkey”
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings
The devil
’s walking parody
On all four
-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.

May God bless you! Fr. Schaller
