“Oh, Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every which way!” Do you remember this line from a song some years ago? It is a rather humorous country western song which pokes fun at human conceit. But conceit, or pride, is not a vice to be easily dismissed. It is one of the seven deadly sins. Frequently the Lord exhorts his listeners to be humble, to think of themselves as being lower than others. This is a virtue which He possesses to perfection. And it is taught in the Old Testament as well: “My Child, conduct your affairs with humility.... Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.” (from today’s first reading, Sirach 3:17,18.) An authentically humble person does not deny the gifts or talents he possesses. Rather, a truly humble person fully recognizes them and uses them for the benefit of others. We need people who are good leaders to serve in our community and in our country. Our young children benefit when those who possess the skills to teach devote themselves to that profession. The same can be said even in our worship of God. When those who have good voices, or play instruments well, and contribute their talents in the Sacred Liturgy, God is honored and we are assisted in raising our hearts to Him. There should never be a doubt about using our gifts and talents to the fullest. The important thing is to remember that we have little grounds for being proud about these things, since all that we have we received from God. Be grateful for the gifts which God has given you and “conduct your affairs with humility.”

We are preparing for our 3rd year of Family Faith Formation! We discontinued the typical “CCD” weekly class format in order to return the focus to the Catholic family. The second Wednesday of each month, we gather with the whole family (parents and children!) in the church for a time of prayer. Then, the children go to their classrooms with their catechists, and the parents assemble with me in the church hall. We provide the materials and the support so that the parents can catechize their own children the remaining weeks at home. Registration is this Wednesday, August 31, at 6pm in the church hall (basement). Dinner is provided for the whole family. See you Wednesday!

May God bless you!
