From the Desk of Fr. Schaller - August 29, 2021

One of the challenges the modern world faces is the question of authority. Sometimes literally. (Have you ever seen the bumper sticker that proclaims, “Question Authority”?) This is particularly the case for us Americans. Our country began as a rebellion against the authority of England. When it comes to political issues people may find a variety of ways to settle the problem – in our country it’s the ballot. But what about issues of faith? What about things which go beyond the here and now – but also affect the here and now? Today’s first reading from the book of Deuteronomy addresses the point directly. The Lord gives “statutes and decrees” which are just and which indicate how close God is to His people. God’s authority over us is not an imposition. It is not a compromise or a denial of our human freedom. His laws and commandments are given to us so that we might truly be happy. “Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence....” Out of love for us God has given us His commandments. Out of love for Him – and for our own good – we strive to keep them.

Area Public schools and Assumption Catholic Schools are beginning the fall semester, and our Parish Family Faith Formation will be starting soon as well. This serves as another occasion to remind parents of their responsibility in the education of their children. Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Catholic schools and parish religious education programs exist to assist parents in fulfilling their role. Parents (and grandparents), don’t be afraid to take a strong and active part in the education of your children. Talk with your children about the Faith - share your faith with them. Opportune times are on Sundays before and after Mass (when you can talk about the readings and the homily), and throughout the week whenever circumstances of the day intersect with the Faith. Also, be involved in their formal instruction in the Faith by reviewing with them the things they are learning in their religion classes. We can’t leave to chance a matter so important as the instruction of our children in the Faith. And don’t forget to pray for and with your children! I promise to pray for them, too!

May God bless you!
